Celebrating Edmonton's creative communities with Vignettes.

The Vignettes Design Series (Vignettes), founded in 2013, is an interdisciplinary competition and festival that promotes creative collaboration amongst Edmonton's art, design and culinary communities. The festival has two key components this year: the Vignettes Design Showcase and Vignettes Does Dining. Heading into its fifth year, Vignettes was the inspiration behind the launch of Edmonton Design Week, and is now the anchor event to its debut.

Vignettes Design Showcase

What started as an intimate gathering of designers to explore the works of new emerging talent has now exploded into a full showcase of collaborative design. Tasked with the challenge of co-creating awe-inspiring designs in 8 ft. x 8 ft. spaces, 14 teams of artists, designers, craftspeople and contractors have merged their talents in this year’s Design Showcase. To top it off, this year each team has integrated musical soundscapes into their designs, made possible with the support of ATB Financial. Recorded by revered local musicians including Mitchmatic and Nik Kozub from Shout Out Out Out Out, the ATB Soundscapes offer visitors a fully immersive creative experience.

The Design Showcase’s VIP Opening Gala is Edmonton Design Week’s official launch party, launching September 22nd. The Design Showcase is hosted in the mural-clad Vignettes Building north of City Hall (10004 103A Ave.), and will be open to the public until October 15th.

Vignettes Does Dining

As Edmonton’s original pop-up restaurant series that features design-led dining experiences, Vignettes Does Dining is back and bringing even more local restaurant collaborations this year. Now in its second year, Vignettes’ design teams will be pairing up with eight of Edmonton’s most celebrated restaurants to create unique, one-of-a-kind dining experiences hosted in The Christenson, its pop-up restaurant sponsored by Christenson Developments. From the artwork on the walls and the live performances to every last detail on the tabletop and the garnishes on your plate, each experience is thoughtfully curated; no two restaurants will ever be the same. Menus are specifically catered to each collaboration, so savour every bite and sip — these creations are for Vignettes Does Dining only.

Beginning September 9th with Tzin Wine and Tapas, The Christenson will be reinvented for fine and casual dining experiences weekly throughout September and October. Other restaurant collaborators include: Wishbone, Three Boars Eatery, Farrow, Have Mercy, Holly Roller, El Cortez, Alta and the Alder Room.

More Creative Partnerships

In addition to the design showcase and pop-up dining series, Vignettes is teaming up with other local groups to further celebrate creative collaborations in the city. This year, Vignettes is working with Crash Hotel to completely transform four of their undeveloped suites. Participants will redesign the spaces from the ground up, with their work becoming permanent fixtures in the hotel. These unique suites will be unveiled to the public during Edmonton Design Week’s official after party on September 30th.

Continuing its partnership with the University of Alberta’s Student’s Design Association (SDA), the SDA’s temporary design store, BUILT, will be hosted in the basement of the Vignettes Building featuring products created by the U of A’s Industrial Design and Visual Communication Design students and alumni. BUILT will be available during Design Week, from September 22nd to the 30th.
