5 Things To Do This Week: January 9 to 13

Percussive productions, comedy and Americana country.

January 6, 2017

Listen to the unusual percussion sounds of STOMP

Experience the rhythms and beats of matchboxes, brooms, garbage cans and Zippo lighters in this theatrical performance from international percussion group, STOMP, when it comes to the capital region on January 10 and 11.

Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, 11455 87 Ave., stomponline.com

Crack a smile, or two, with Orny Adams

Remember the 2002 film Comedian? The movie spotlighted Jerry Seinfeld, but it also introduced us to up-and-coming wisecracker Orny Adams. He’ll be in Edmonton from January 12 to 15.

The Comic Strip, #1646 8881 170 St., 780-483-5999, thecomicstrip.ca

Take in a night of Americana-country

The voice of singer-songwriter Ben Rogers has been described as “smoke-damaged velvet soaked in Tennessee whiskey” — we can’t say much more than that. You’ll have to see him live on January 13 to understand what that sounds like.

St.Basil’s Cultural Centre, 10819 71 Ave., 780-278-6407, newmoonfolkclub.com

Catch a Star Wars-inspired show

Charles Ross spent much of his childhood watching Star Wars, which has inspired him to create this one-man show on January 13 where he single-handedly plays all the characters, sings the music, fights the battles, and plots of the Star Wars series.

Festival Place, 100 Festival Way, Sherwood Park, festivalplace.ab.ca

Explore the masks worn by Indigenous people

In this special performance from Mile Zero Dance comes an exploration of the different faces imposed on Indigenous people by non-indigenous people throughout the years of colonialism. Performed by Lady Vanessa Cardona and Todd Houseman, the show will feature mask, dance and poetry. Catch the production on January 13 or 14.

Spazio Performativo, 10816 95 St., 780-424-157, milezerodance.com
