"Art Version of E-Dating"

The mysterious, ambiguous Margaret Dragu and Freya Olafson collaboration

Latitude 53 Gallery, Oct. 7 to 29

Interdisciplinary artists Margaret Dragu and Freya Olafson will meet in person for the first time when they debut their new performance and installation work this month. Regina native Dragu likens the partnership, which was brainstormed and planned online via Skype meetings, to the “art version of e-dating.”

Latitude 53 asked the artists to collaborate on an exhibit because they share dance backgrounds and their works have feminist themes. The Oct. 7 debut will be stage one, as they expect it to evolve beyond opening day.

The meta-art project is about the process of putting together a collaborative show, which the artists have watched and documented as a process itself, a kind of “slow-moving reality television series,” jokes Dragu.

Olafson, from Winnipeg, says she will draw some inspiration for this show from her series “Avatar,” a provocative multi-media work using the Web to explore identity and humankind’s desire to be seen. (10248 106 St., 780-423-5353, latitude53.org)
