De Dutch Pannekoek House

Delicious Dutch pancakes come to Edmonton

Canada’s original Dutch pancake house  is based on the idea that pancakes (pannekoek in Dutch) are more than just a breakfast item. The plate-sized, paper-thin pancakes don’t just come slathered in syrup — they often come with wild salmon, or hashbrowns, bacon and onion, all piled high on top. Founder John Dys came to Canada from the Netherlands, settled in Vancouver and worked for many years in restaurants before starting his own hamburger joint, the Frying Dutchman. He opened the first De Dutch Pannekoek House in 1975. Now, more than 20 locations later, the delicious franchise has arrived in Edmonton. (10030 Jasper Ave., 587-520-8841, dedutch.com)
