Laura St. Pierre's "Urban Vernacular"

Running until February 13, 2011

Art Gallery of Alberta

Last summer, just north of Churchill Square, multidisciplinary artist Laura St. Pierre turned old beat-up cars in to lush terrariums. Now, the visual arts instructor at Grande Prairie Regional College has a show at the AGA showcasing her large-format photography of an urban wasteland made entirely through junk.

"I wanted to build something out of all of this permanent material that is no longer useful after its initial consumption," she says.

Her architectural reconstructions are created from garbage such as plastic bags and Styrofoam packaging. The images are strikingly subtle, although there's an overt environmental message in them. "I think people know what they should be doing differently as a culture, but it's hard to get there."
