Big Idea: Crimefighting Patios

A vibrant community with people walking the streets, businesses that have bright windows facing the avenue and patrons on patios is a community that deters crime. This week, more than 30 Avenue Top 40 Under 40 alumni, and community and city leaders gathered at Jack’s Grill to discuss Avenue’s 2012 Big Idea theme, “Making Edmonton safer.” My table included Edmonton Police Commission Vice-Chair Shami Sandhu and Coun....

Edmonton's Economy Gets an A-

Edmonton received a sparkling grade for economic growth, but it came with a warning that there could be consequences for the future if we don’t do more to diversify our business community. At its annual luncheon Tuesday at the Shaw Conference Centre, Edmonton Economic Development Corporation President and CEO Ron Gilbertson praised Edmonton for its overall economic health, giving the city an overall A- grade. The major reasons for the good grade? Over the last 25 years, Edmonton’s real personal income...

Linkin Park Headlines Sonic Boom

Linkin Park will come to Edmonton for the very first time Sept. 2, to headline this year’s instalment of the Sonic Boom festival. The announcement was made Monday morning at the southside studios of Sonic 102.9, with morning man Garner Andrews and Dave Johnston of Union Events announcing the roster for Edmonton’s largest annual rock festival, held on the Northlands grounds. Unlike last year's festival, which was moved indoors into the Edmonton EXPO Centre, this year's...

Catch a Breath at Sorrentino's Garlic Festival

Through 21 years of Garlic Festivals, Sorrentino’s restaurants have managed to put garlic in any kind of Italian meat or pasta dish you can think of. But ice cream? Sunday night’s kickoff at the downtown location saw executive chef Sonny Sung create a dessert that infused gelato and bread pudding with garlic grown in Claresholm, Alta. Using locally grown garlic is a major theme of this year’s festival, and it’s prevalent in one of the most unusual desserts I’ve tried. Alone, the...

Inside the Alberta Party

Last winter, the Alberta Party invited me to be a fly on the wall as Edmonton-Rutherford candidate Michael Walters held an intimate strategy meeting in the basement of his home. At the end of the meeting, the party staff and members huddled together to utter a group cheer like something you'd see in a football game. Their rallying cry? “Deb Grey!” So what's a centrist politician like Walters doing channeling the campaign spirit of the first Reform Party MP ever elected? Obviously, it's not the policy...

Big Idea: Best Bar None

As part of our ongoing look at how we can make Edmonton safer — which culminates in our October Big Idea issue — Avenue examines the roles bars can play in reducing crime. What do you think? We want to hear from our readers, to make our Big Idea for 2012 truly a forum for ideas. If you pick up any major city's newspapers, you can quickly learn the names of a few of its toughest bars. There would be stories about assaults, vandalism and possibly even homicides that occur outside — and sometimes inside — of those...

Party Crasher: Storybook Ball

Just over 550 people, including 120 kids, attended Edmonton’s first-ever Storybook Ball in support of Ronald McDonald House. It was a fundraiser with a twist, as it encouraged families to come together, rather than having the adults leave the kids with the sitters. The 11th floor of the Delta Edmonton South was transformed into a carnival area, with an area for kids to make their own crowns and play games — and to be entertained by magicians, jugglers and balloon artists. CTV Edmonton's Erin Isfeld emceed the event while wearing fairy princess garb. CISN...

Head East (Actually North) For Malaysian Flavours

Restaurateur Richard Lim’s Malaysian roots have inspired his latest venture. East — which joins the two Lazia locations and the Wildflower Grill under Lim’s umbrella — advertises itself as “modern Chinese,” but the must-try dishes on the menu are all inspired by the street hawkers of Kuala Lumpur. Under the stewardship of executive chef Nathin Bye, East has meticulously researched its subject. In fact, during a media tasting on...

2011 Census: How Much Did Edmonton Grow?

According to the results of the 2011 census, which Statistics Canada released on Wednesday, Edmonton is the second-fastest growing city in Canada. Edmonton’s metro area grew by 12.1 per cent over the last five years, outpaced only by Calgary’s 12.6 per cent growth. Our city’s metro area is now at 1,159,869. That means 124,924 more people live in the area than in 2006. Calgary still ranks as the country’s fifth largest city, and Edmonton No. 6, but at the current rate of growth Ottawa could fall to six by as soon as the next census period....
