Saturday was the perfect day for Tutti Frutti (10420 82 Ave., 780-988-8679) to open up shop.
With plus-30 Celsius temperatures and crowds of people helping the Edmonton International Fringe Festival beat its own attendance record, this frozen yogurt joint just needed to open the door to its lower-level space to see customers swarm its tables.
Unlike the countless Yogen Früz kiosks and Kiwi Kiss in City Centre — but much like Twisted Yogurt Creations in Sherwood Park — Tutti Frutti is self-serve. You just grab a bowl, pull a lever and fill it with one, two or all seven of the smooth, sometimes sugar-free flavours, which include coffee, blueberry, lychee and melon.
Next, take your bowl to the topping bar. You can smother it Oreo crumbs and strawberry syrup, or accent it with pecans and kiwis, or divide half of it for the sundae-loving child in you and the other half for your health-conscious side.

When you're done, just take it to the scale and pay for its weight (about 50 cents/ounce). It will probably run you between $3.50 and $6 depending on your dessert style (hint: toppings weigh more than the yogurt).
Tutti Frutti is an California franchise with stores in Hong Kong, Brazil and Vietnam. This, however, is the first Canadian store and the biggest in North America. It also has North America's most flavours on offer at one time.
It adds yet another option of frozen treat to Whyte Avenue. Within just a few blocks people can get gelato at Block 1912, scoops of hard ice cream at What's the Scoop, elaborate "fix-ins" (toppings smashed in with ice cream scoops) at Marble Slab Creamery and, across the street, Dairy Queen will be open by the end of the summer.

A franchise that should have stayed in the USA....

I was very disappointed with Tutti Frutti. The building that they are in does not feel like a frozen yogurt shop at all. I walked up to an employee and asked if any of the yogurt was no sugar added or nonfat and she said no. I was very disappointed. Frozen yogurt is suppose to be a healthy treat. Walk down to Marble Slab if you want a high fat, sugar loaded treat. My boyfriend tasted the chocolate kind and said "wow, that can't be healthy for you". The toppings were not that great as well from what i could see. I really hope people don't think this is a "healthy snack". I looked on Tutti Frutti's Facebook today and they posted that they added a new peanut butter flavour. Go check out how many calories and grams of fat are in a serving of that stuff on the companies website and hopefully you will be aware! If you are looking to try a frozen yogurt shop go to Twisted Yogurt. All of there frozen yogurt is nonfat and the plain kind is no sugar added! They have tons of toppings to choose from. The staff are always friendly and its an Edmonton based company so you will be supporting a local business!
