Emma: How many spas do you know with a fulltime doctor on staff? May we introduce you to Urban Body CosMedics. This downtown Edmonton establishment goes beyond basic skin-care, offering personalized medical treatment programs for a number of skin conditions.

Rita: The medical spa carries three different product lines. One is Obagi — a doctor prescribed skin care line for serious conditions, including long-term difficult acne, discolouration, and serious sun damage. Another is the skin-friendly makeup line Jane Iredale.

E: The third is G.M. Collins — an award-winning, critically acclaimed skin care line, catering to all skin types. It was created by a military doctor who treated burn victims, and later worked with an esthetician to develop skin care products based on the same principles of skin-repair and rejuvination.

R: It’s like plastic surgery, without the surgery!

E: — Or the plastic!

R: Right.

E: That’s actually what Urban Body CosMedics is all about. In addition to the skin care lines, professional consultation, the spa also offers laser and radio frequency or heat treatments to target issues like age spots, wrinkles, scars, unwanted hair, sagging skin and love handles, among others.

R: Pretty much all the joys of aging that come along with a life well-lived.

E: But at least we know there are non-surgical solutions available right here in our city.

R: Both the G.M. Collins line and laser treatments are popular in L.A., and are used and recommended by a number of well-known actresses, including Demi Moore, Nicole Kidman and Kate Winslet.

E: Treatment programs begin with a consultation, often referred by local body guru Dr. Ashwani K. Singh.

R: After the initial consulation, a treatment plan is created. This could include a number of procedures including microdermabrasion, chemical peels, vitamin C facials, laser hair removal, and Accent Body Contouring.

E: The concept is pretty fantastic . . . instead of cutting and slicing, you can opt for a less-invasive program that uses heat technology to target problem areas.

R: Accent Radiofrequency Therapy tightens sagging skin and gets rid of excess volume. Meanwhile, Pixel Skin Resurfacing reduces signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles, open pores and age spots by using laser heat to promote new collagen production, making skin look younger and healthier.

E: Plus — you can get procedures using Advanced Flourescence Technology (AFT), which uses pulsed light to treat acne, rejuvenate skin, and eliminate unwanted hair.

R: Overall, Urban Body CosMedics has staff members who are incredibly informed and educated, and are eager to share their knowledge.

E: Thanks to their skills, products and procedures, we can all rest easy knowing how to care for our bodies now.

R: And how to tweak and refine them later.

G.M. Collin products (cleansers, exfoliating gels, treating lotions, etc) range in price from $35 to $125 and are available at Urban Body CosMedics (11528 Jasper Ave, 780-42809333). Urban Body CosMedics also offers a number of procedures including, but not limited to Microdermabrasion ($125), Skin Resurfacing ($99 - $499), Laser Hair Removal ($59 - $529), Accent Body Contouring ($999 for 8 treatments).

Emma and Rita are young Edmonton women working (and playing) in the capital city. Together, they have roughly 50 years of beauty experience, and have what some might describe as an unhealthy addiction to potions, products and pampering.
