Five Romantic Ideas Inspired by the Movies

If there is anything you can learn from the movies, it’s how to woo someone you love. This Valentine’s Day, ditch the chocolates and flowers, and learn from the professionals about how to really sweep away your significant other.

1. Sing to the Neighbourhood

Wake the neighbours by singing in the streets like Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed did in It's a Wonderful Life. Some might think you're crazy ... crazy in love! Don't forget to promise to lasso the moon and feed it to your sweetheart. Trust us, she'll love it.

2. Send Over a Wake-up Song

As taught by John Cusack's character in Say Anything... blast your lover's favourite song from a boom box as you hold it outside his or her bedroom window. If you're working out of town or can't be together on the 14th, modernize the gesture by playing the song over the phone. Or, if you can manage to stealthily change your partner's ring tone to his or her favourite song, send a very special wake-up call.

3. Make Pottery

Take a pottery class together and make something beautiful, just like Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze did in their roles in Ghost (well, sort of). Let the clay slide between your fingers and it might just lead to something more than an oddly shaped vase.

4. Boil Lobster Together

Cancel your reservations and share a laugh as you attempt to boil live lobsters at home. As you watch the crustaceans run amok, preparing the meal may be more memorable than eating it. But, as the before and after scenes in Annie Hall indicate, only the right lover will be into it.

5. Say Eu Te Amo

In the romantic comedy Love Actually, Colin Firth's character learns Portuguese so he can eventually confess his love to his English-deficient housekeeper. Now, we're not suggesting you wait outside the airport's customs gate and court newcomers, but writing a poem or letter, or just speaking a few words in a romantic language, is sure to make your partner love you more.
