Amy-Claire Huestis: Where the Rain Falls without Falling

Date/Time

Sep 22, 2018 to Oct 13, 2018
11:00 AM until 05:00 PM

Description

As a daily ritual, Amy-Claire Huestis walks the path along the dyke near her home in the Fraser River Delta, in British Columbia, at a place called Brunswick Point.  This little area of land -- recognized as globally important migratory bird habitat -- is shared by Canada’s largest coal terminal.  Walking the path between paradise and environmental destruction, the artist communicates to us works made through “deep listening” to nature – through careful observation of birds, grasses, moons and tides.  Her works erase boundaries between movement, creative writing, drawing, and painting.
Amy-Claire's visionary practice involves divining, ritual, and duration actions -- these in participation with time and the elements.  Her current work centres around her home in the marshland, where she lives in a little house that floats up and down with the tides.     Alongside solitary works made in the BC landscape, she often collaborates with international artists in residencies and performances -- she performed recently in collaboration at the Glasgow International Art Festival 2018.  Her projects centred on the BC environment include Book of Clouds, a collaborative dance performance, and Rainbow’s Story, a poetic cycle about the delta landscape and its colours -- the works in this exhibition are selected from this poetic cycle.
Amy-Claire's recent residencies include the Bothy Project in Scotland and the University of California Los Angeles Art/Science Center.  Her performances include venues such as University Settlement in New York City, the UCLA Broad Art Centre, and the Baryshnikov Dance Centre in New York City.  She teaches drawing and painting at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in BC’s lower mainland.  Opening Reception: Saturday, September 22 from 2 - 4 pm. Artist Talk @ 3 pm
