While pretzels, nachos and burgers are perfectly acceptable foods to pair with beer, you won’t find anything of the like at this brewpub. Biera, Blind Enthusiasm Brewing Company’s restaurant, is far removed from the pub-style places that are typically paired with breweries. Biera is a pleasant surprise with its offerings of – dare I say – healthy-ish foods cooked over charcoal.

Start and end your meal with sourdough; the homemade bread is a soft base for a silky combination of whipped lardo and kefir butter, while the sourdough soft ice cream is satisying without being too sweet. In between, share dishes like bok choy in an addictive black sesame sauce, savoury beef ribs made with meat from Acme Meat Market next door, and crispy, smoked potatoes in a balanced, creamy whey clam sauce. “Fresh” has become an almost redundant restaurant phrase, but it truly applies here with quality local suppliers and seasonal ingredients.

Since everything is intended to be shared, three or four dishes work well for two diners, and the more diners in your group the more you can try. So invite all your friends – but make a reservation, it’s become the jewel of the up-and-coming Ritchie neighbourhood. Ordering a beer is a must – with a rotating selection of made-on-site beers, there’s something from every palette from hoppy, spicy beers to smooth, refreshing ones. Can’t decide? Get a flight of four to sample them all. Can’t be persuaded to try a beer? Biera does have a short list of other liquors, including mead. But seriously, try the beer.
