The third restaurant on Gateway Boulevard just off Whyte Avenue from filmmaker and restaurateur Michael Maxxis, The Holy Roller, has a definite Batman vibe. How is that?

Well, you walk in and you’re greeted by a luxurious salon, used as a cafe by day, with winged sitting chairs, bookcases and a wooden bar. It feels like Wayne Manor. But, walk into the restaurant portion of the place, and there is neon, a row of gumball machines, Mexican art, graffiti and a cougar made out of concrete. You’ve entered the Batcave.

Maxxis said that that there is “no concept” to the menu — it’s a mix of Asian, Mediterranean and American food. The highlight is the Detroit-style pizza. The thick-crust pizza is baked with the cheese, then toppings are added afterwards. The dough is crispy and toasty around the edges. The fig and gorgonzola mixes the right amount of sweet with salty, and the thick crust and crunch reminds you of small-town Alberta pizza places you may have visited in the past.
