Forest Heights has a new bar with a beer-heavy drink menu.

Local watering holes are something special; they’re as much about the vibes of the spaces as they are about what’s on tap. When you invite someone to “go for a beer,” you’re considering their company as much as what you’ll be drinking. Cartago — named after a town in Costa Rica where one of the three co-owners, Jordan Watson, has family — is such a place. Watson is a familiar face in the restaurant industry, having worked extensively as a bartender and drink-menu consultant. He chose to open his first bar in Forest Heights because he wanted it to be in an older, established central neighbourhood that has traditionally been underserved. “It’s a space for community to gather, to get to know your neighbours, to foster community
and friendships,” says co-owner Katy Ingraham. “It’s a very European style bar, we just want to be there for the community.” Despite its name, the bar is distinctly German with a beer-heavy drink menu (of German and Canadian micro-brewery varieties) and German fare. There’s no kitchen, which means the limited menu is prepared fresh behind the bar; meats from local maker Fuge Fine Meats are the star. Though it’s intended to be a simple neighbourhood spot, it’s worth going out of your way to visit. Now, who’s buying the next round?
