Despite a daylong threat of incoming showers, Edmonton’s sky granted the Shaw Conference Centre’s Patio Party a sun-filled summer evening this past July. Though rarely open to the public, guests at this free event were granted access to Shaw’s Hall D patio to take in its awe-inspiring river valley view.
“We are always looking for ways to engage Edmontonians and let them know what happens at the Shaw Conference Centre,” said Imran Gill, the centre’s Marketing and Communications Manager, “because this really is their convention centre.”
On top of the live music from local singer-songwriter duo Lloyd Lewis and Gary Kump, the gourmet burgers from the Shaw’s chefs and cocktails (including a vodka-soda topped with a popsicle), the evening was also host to behind-the-scenes tours of the Shaw’s innards – everywhere from the kitchens to the gardens and compost area. Following the tour, partygoers took in a beekeeping demonstration hosted by beekeeper Patty Milligan at the centre’s hive.

“It’s a beautiful day in a beautiful summer patio downtown. There’s more energy downtown and more people want to embrace patios like this in our city, and enjoy our beautiful river valley. I can’t imagine where else you would want to be on a summer day like this.”-Chris Buyze, President of the Downtown Edmonton Community League
