Apart from the storied fruitcake, there is not a more ubiquitous holiday gift than the sweater. But, unlike that tacky reindeer-adorned jumper from your great aunt, the fashion-forward offerings this season are not likely to end up in your re-gifting pile. Be it bold graphics, offbeat colour combinations or rich fabrications, there is something for everyone on your list.

Look for interesting textures, like this season’s shag-inspired fabrications, or bold text-centric styles as a way to update your occasional dressing for parties or events. Alternatively, a chic cardigan or embellished pullover can instantly update your office attire, while classic patterns such as plaid or Fair Isle offer a timeless simplicity to your casual look.

Weekend Wonderland

When building your casual winter looks, choose oversized versions of classic designs such as a traditional plaid or ski-chalet inspired graphics. Bigger is better this season when it comes to patterns. Aside from just the motif of the sweater, think big when it comes to the overall fabrication of the garment. Large-scale knits are everywhere this season, and they play double duty as both fashion-conscious and cozy during Edmonton’s inevitable cold snaps.

Try This: Pair a smaller scale patterned shirt under your bold winter cardigan. This will give your look added detail, without overwhelming your outfit.

Tip: The fuzzy texture on this sweater adds visual interest to a conventional design. The unique nature of the fabric gives an otherwise basic pullover a whimsical element that acts to elevate a casual ensemble.

Workplace Wow-factor

Just because you are stuck in an office all day doesn’t mean that you need to settle on lacklustre fashions. Think of your sweater as not only a means to keep warm at work, but also as an avenue to up your style game. Stick with rich tones and classic cuts for a professional and put-together look, but don’t be afraid to play with some of this season’s most eye-catching details.

Try This: Looking for a way to spruce up your tired work wear? Substitute your boring blazer for an embellished pullover. Pair this piece with a cotton button-up and classic trousers in order to tone down the sparkle for office hours.

Tip: The luxe fabric of this cashmere cardigan can compete with any suit jacket on the market. Accompany this look with a silk tie to keep your outfit work-appropriate. The monotone colour palette also helps to keep your look cohesive and professional.

Cozy Cocktail Party

Let your sweater be the star player of your evening look this winter. Opt for more form-fitting and lightweight fabrics when putting together your evening ensemble. Treat the sweater as your statement piece, and let the additional elements of your outfit act as accoutrements to your overall attire.

Try This (Her): A sweater coat is a great alternative to a jacket over a cocktail dress. Keep the hemline of the sweater equal to, or just slightly longer, than the dress for a fun mod-inspired look.

Tip (Him): The bold lettering gives this basic black pullover fashion-forward appeal. Keep the rest of your outfit relatively tame, and let your sweater do the talking.
