In a dining scene filled with fresh dining concepts and fads, Bistro Praha is unapologetically un-trendy. Walk into the dining room and it could be 1975. Or 1995. The old brass lamps cast a warm yellow glow, and the weathered photo of a European mountain scene dominates the decor. The servers wear white shirts and classical music plays in the background.

Yet, it remains the best place in town to get a schnitzel; the crust of the classic Wiener schnitzel is crisp, but not greasy, and it’s a fantastic comfort dish. Bread dumplings, pork hocks and even roasted goose – it’s Central European done well. And you can’t go wrong with Czech beers. Finishing the meal off with a strong coffee and a fruit-filled crepe will make you appreciate the classics.

Really, a visit to Bistro Praha is like listening to your favourite Velvet Underground or Beatles albums. While it’s great to appreciate the newest stuff, sometimes you just have to go back to the classics. –Steven Sandor
