Over 200 supporters of the Centre for Family Literacy gathered June 9 at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald to help raise $75,000 at the fourth annual Wine and Words. Canadian alt-country musicians Kendel Carson, Dustin Bentall and Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy provided the music, Sobeys brought the wine and Swish Flowers donated centrepieces. Books, chosen by the musicians, acted as party favours.

Chairperson Maie Kellerman says, “[The centre’s programs] often don’t just improve the literacy of the child, but of the parent with that child.” Approximately 15,000 individuals per year seek to improve their literacy through the organization’s programs. Kellerman says programs have assisted individuals in many capacities – from helping parents and children learn to rhyme and have fun with reading to helping adults to understand the driving manual for a Class 5 licence.
