Best Patios For A Coffee Break

When you’re looking to enjoy a cafe al fresco, stop by one of these spots

Barking Buffalo Cafe

When you order a caffeinated beverage at Barking Buffalo Cafe, you’ll receive a to-go cup that is cheekily hand stamped with a buffalo, a coffee cup, and a t-shirt. That’s because Barking Buffalo Cafe, where you can sample brews using beans from Toronto’s Pilot Coffee Roasters, shares a space with Salgado Fenwick. Browse the locally made goods while you wait for your latte, then enjoy a coffee break on a petite patio while checking out the whimsical and consistently amazing window displays and people-watching on 124 Street.

It’s safe to say that the coffee at Credo is top notch – the local cafe has earned the number one spot in the Best Cafe category of our Best Restaurants issue three years running. However, Credo also offers two patios to choose from – depending on what you’re looking for. At the downtown location, you can enjoy people-watching amid the lively atmosphere of 104 Street. The 124 Street location, on the other hand, is perfect for when you want a bit of a break from the bustle – you have to descend to below street level, and can sip your coffee and nibble some Jacek chocolate on a tiny, almost hidden concrete patio.

Gracious Goods Cafe

If you’re seeking a coffee break away from the bustle of a busy street, this Belgravia cafe may be the perfect solution. The small patio overlooks a scenic residential area, so you’ll be able to enjoy your beverage in a tranquil atmosphere. And, if you need to leave in a rush, not to worry – the LRT station is only a two minute walk away.

Little Brick

The interior space in the heritage home in which Little Brick is housed is charming and full of character, but on a gorgeous summer day, the patio can’t be beat. You enter the yard through a wooden gate and may feel like you’re stepping into a secret garden rather than a coffee shop in Riverdale. Whether you prefer to sit on the deck or at one of the picnic tables, it’s an idyllic setting where you can recharge with a cup of coffee.

Iconoclast Koffiehuis

The patio at Iconoclast Koffiehuis may not exactly be traditional, but if you’re looking to enjoy your Americano in a more industrial setting, it’s the perfect fit. When the weather is nice, the series of bay doors in the space are opened to allow patrons to caffeinate al fresco – you can take a spot at one of the chairs set up on the stretch of concrete just outside the cafe.

Cafe Blackbird

If you find yourself in Crestwood on a beautiful day, Cafe Blackbird’s patio is the perfect spot. The cafe brews beans by the local Iconoclast Coffee, tea from Cally’s Tea and treats from the Italian Centre Shop. Take a seat on the wrought iron patio furniture, scope out the other shops in the area, and enjoy the atmosphere.

Remedy Cafe

Remedy Cafe recently opened a fifth location, in Terwillegar, and many have come to know and love the other locations, such as the downtown Jasper Avenue spot or the constantly packed location near the University of Alberta. However, when it comes to lounging with a chai on a patio, the 124 Street location is your best bet. Filled with colourful chairs and draped with playful cafe lights, the spot is an oasis just off 124 Street. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a four-legged friend out enjoying the pet-friendly patio.
