City of Life: Rediscover Nature in Your Own Backyard with NatureTalks

Rediscovering nature in your own backyard

Did you know that, these days, more than 80 per cent of Canadians live in and around cities? And even though 90 per cent of us report we are happier when we’re connected to nature, it can be easy to overlook nature in our own backyards.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) wants you to reconnect and rediscover nature in your city. Join us in Edmonton on November 13 for NatureTalks – City of Life: Rediscovering Nature in Your Own Backyard. Speakers will include Chris Fisher, Author, Filmmaker and Television Host; Carolyn Scotchmer, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation Executive Director; Dan Kraus, NCC’s Senior Conservation Biologist; Simon Jackson, Founder of the Spirit Bear Youth Coalition and Lorna Crozier, Travelling Poet for Toque & Canoe, Teacher and Officer of the Order of Canada.

NatureTalks is NCC’s Cross-Country Speaker Series. As part of this event, we will reveal our recently developed list of the top 10 nature hot spots in Edmonton, including Big Lake and Whitemud Ravine. Get your tickets today at

Straddling the western boundary of Edmonton, Big Lake includes open water, wetlands, mud flats and stands of mature aspen, birch and white spruce. During the spring and fall, thousands of ducks and geese can be seen. Whitemud Ravine is a long, deep creek valley that extends from the southwest edge of the city through to the North Saskatchewan River. The ravine provides habitat for more than 150 species of birds.

Find out what other hot spots made the new top 10 list by attending the upcoming NatureTalks event at the Blatchford Air Hangar in Fort Edmonton Park on November 13. Get your tickets today at
