Job title: President and CEO, Atlas Biotechnologies.
Why he’s a 2019 Top 40 Under 40: He facilitates groundbreaking research related to medical cannabis.
Sheldon Croome has always had the entrepreneurial spirit. But, when a family member was diagnosed with cancer and started using medicinal cannabis as a successful treatment to reduce a tumour — that person is healthy, over six years later — Croome got the idea for a business that would provide patients with safe, affordable access to effective medical cannabis treatments.
“That experience gave me the drive to find out what the science behind the [cannabis] plant is, and how we can use the components of the plant to effectively treat different diseases,” he says. Croome founded Atlas Biotechnologies in 2015 to focus on cannabis research, medical science and disease treatment; its subsidiary, Atlas Growers, is a licensed producer of medical cannabis that supplies personalized treatments to patients in Canada and around the world. Today, Atlas Biotechnologies is a global leader in the field of medical cannabis, and is opening additional operations in Denmark this fall.
“My vision is to create the world’s most trusted cannabis products, to help people feel confident and comfortable that when they get a product from [Atlas Growers] that it’s going to deliver the results they’re looking for, consistently.”
One of Croome’s biggest personal achievements happened earlier this year when Atlas Growers was invited to be a founding member of the International Phytomedicines Institute in partnership with Harvard School of Medicine.
“This was a huge achievement and now I truly have the ability to pursue my vision with some of the best minds in the world. My passion is to help people and this business has given me the opportunity to help millions of people.”
